Rummage Theatre brings Cleansed, a play about the Magdalene Laundries to Dorset

Lauren Whitehead and Rhea Soulsby as two Magdalene Laundry penitents

After a successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2012, Rummage Theatre are now bringing their first play, Cleansed, to Dorset.

‘Cleansed’ deals with the Magdalene Laundries, which were catholic-run workhouses for ‘fallen women’ where ‘voluntary prisoners’ were incarcerated to ‘wash their sins away’. It is believed that 10,000 women passed through the laundries in the Irish Republic between 1922 and 1996. It was not until 2011 that the Irish government set up an inquiry into the treatment of these women and girls.

Cleansed explores what has happened to the survivors, our present day victims who cope with life in the aftermath of these traumatic experiences. To this day they are still waiting for an official apology from the 4 religious orders involved.

Rummage Theatre devise their own work inspired by real life events, evoking emotions, asking questions and sparking debate. Working as part of Weymouth College’s LEAP (Local Emerging Artists Platform) project, they completed a weeks run at the Edinburgh Fringe last year, receiving a 4 star review from Broadway Baby and excellent praise from many of the Fringe critics.

“…this new play looks at a tragic part of history which needs telling.” Three Weeks

“Cleansed is a play that gets stronger as it goes and has an ending that is both dramatic and chilling… definitely worth your time.” Broadway Baby

“It is a stunning, evocative début from a new theatre company and will soon be starting a tour, which I would recommend unreservedly.” The F Word
